The use of Gingival Retraction Cord and Cord Packer
A gingival retraction cord is used typically during the preparation of the tooth in common dental crown procedure and also in common dental bridge procedure by the dentists.
It is inserted below the gum line and and around the specific tooth that has been prepared for the crown or bridge and also into the gingival sulcus during the process . The natural space found between the tooth and the gum tissue that surrounds the tooth is called gingival sulcus. Generally plaque builds up in this area, which can lead to several dental issues. The purpose of a gingival retraction cord is to provide a clear working view of a tooth to dentist prior to making a dental impression.
Uses
Gingival retraction cord is similar to yarn stick or a flossing stick. It pushes the gum away from the prepared margin for tooth which may come in between while taking an impression.
Side Effects
It is the best method to push the gum away to make a clear view of the tooth but it may cause temporary swelling and inflammation of gums. There may be bleeding also.
Instrument used for Retracting the cord
Dental instrument Cord Packer is used to pack
the retraction cord in gingival sulcus. The cord packers come with serrated as well as non serrated
working ends. Non serrated round
working ends are used for atraumatic cord placement and serrated cord packers
should be used with braided cord.
