Periodontal scalers
Periodontal scalers are dental instruments used in scaling and root planing as well as in the prophylactic and periodontal care of teeth. The
working ends come in different shapes and sizes, but they have narrow tip at
the end. This allows the access to narrow embrasure spaces between teeth.
Scalers are different from periodontal curettes, which
has a blunt tip.
Periodontal scalers
are used to remove calculus from teeth along
with periodontal curettes . The
curettes are often universal and they can be used on both supra and sub-gingival
calculus removals but scalers are for supra-gingival use. It can damage the gingiva if used below the gum line.
Anterior scaler is
straight and posterior scaler has an angled shank which allows for easy access
to posterior teeth.
Scalers have scraping
edges on both sides of their blades and are fit for both mesial and distal surfaces of any tooth .
Scalers are best used
when their terminal shank, the last portion of the functional shank which is closest
to the working end, is angled slightly toward the surface of the tooth.
There are two types of
periodontal scalers :
·
Anterior sickle scalers are used on anterior teeth. They are
made with one working-end and are categorized as single-ended instruments. They
can be combined to produce a double-ended instrument with two working ends on
both sides.
·
Posterior sickle scalers can be used on both anterior and
posterior teeth. Two posterior sickle scalers are combined to form a
double-ended instrument.
