Condensing
Instruments
The dentist use a variety of instruments to put the amalgam to the cavity preparation and properly condense it . Condensers and Amalgam carriers are used for this purpose.
Amalgam Carriers
Amalgam carriers transport the prepared amalgam restorative material to the cavity
preparation. Amalgam carriers have hollow working ends. They are called barrels
and amalgam is packed into it for transportation. Single and Double-ended
carriers are available with different barrel sizes like mini, large, and jumbo.
The amalgam is ejected into the cavity preparation by pressing the lever
(located on the top of the carrier) . Two carriers are used during the amalgam
placement procedure normally. This saves the refilling time for the dentist who
is ejecting or condensing a carrier load. The Amalgam carriers should be packed
properly otherwise it may fall out before it is ejected into the cavity
preparation. Eject any remaining amalgam
alloy from the carrier into the amalgam well after amalgam material placement
is completed. When the amalgam is allowed to harden in the carrier, it is no
longer serviceable.
Condensors
Amalgamcondensers, often called pluggers, are used to condense or pack the amalgam
filling materials into the cavity preparation. The working end is large enough
to compress the soft amalgam without sinking into it. They come in single and
double ended designs. They come in various shapes and size of working ends,
which may be smooth or serrated.
